Congrats @satch for winning the June tournament. You can now wear your 👑 flair if you like. :) The second tournament seemed to progress similarly to the first one, with the winner being clear from about mid-month onward. We only have a sample size of two, but I believe this reflects the 5-3-1 scoring: if one happens to get the top rank on multiple days, it builds a lead that's hard for anyone to beat due to the strong randomness in the game.

I made a subspace for tea fans! If you like tea, head over to s/Tea and share your thoughts. I figure the cross section between smolnet people and tea fans probably has some overlap.

Don't know if this is something that would be useful to share as we're heading back into some warm weather again in the North East. I have an old house 1930's buid so not great insulation. Thinking about passive sollitions that I could afford I got some silver backed .5" foam board at the hardware store. The sheets are 48"x96", and half inch thick are around $20/per. You can cut it across to a width that sits on the window sill. My windoes are around 29" wide so I think I got about 3 - 30"x48"...

Pascal News 1974-1983 — I was browsing around on Bitsavers and found a Pascal Newsletter 1974-1983. [http link] I have yet to read any of it but it looks interesting from a historical perspective.

US to become a failed state — Of course it already is, but now becoming more undeniably observable. So, when the DNC slips in Mr. Biden's replacement (which now has to happen) after the primary, we will be voting for a candidate appointed by the 'star chamber' -- Hillary, Obama, or whoever it is pulling Biden's strings. After all the propaganda about Democrats holding the gates of Democracy against the barbarians, this is a clear and well-planned semi-coup to keep control of the world without...

🌒 s/misfin

I've added support for "at rest" message encryption in the python misfin implementation. When encryption is enabled, you send your private key to decrypt the messages in the gembox and the key remains active for a certain amount of time. There's also experimental support for encrypted file uploads: you upload a file via Titan, and it gives you a download URL with a decryption key that you can include in your misfin messages. New York Times is Silent on Debate — Because it didn't go well for Biden... Not just the front page; there is no mention of the debate in the entire paper... Trump came off as a liar, which these days is normal for a politician. A bit scary but surprisingly civilized. Biden on the other hand, sounded like the cranky mean old fart and couldn't string two sentences together, and announced that he beat medicaid... I expected NYT to at least mention this event, which has opened up a public...

🌒 s/Food-Preservation

Any folks into food preservation? (Canning, Fermentation, Making forms of refrigeration) — Was hoping to find a fermentation, jamming, refrigeration, or canning subspace, but couldn't (sorry if I missed something). Anyone interested in the art of food preservation? If so, what things do yall do? I ferment a lot of sauerkraut (2-3 week ferment) and frequently make a tasty fast ferment salsa (24-48 hours), although I also have experimented with veggies friends near me have given me, including...

KovoK Official Gemini capsule — We have finally created our own Gemini capsule, arguably becoming the world's first band to do so: We are an Alternative Metal created in 2021 and based in Barcelona, Spain. We have just released our new EP, Take Away, which you can listen to by entering the capsule. Thank you for reading...

@gritty have you done a distribution analysis of your rng for farkle? I could just be exceptionally unlucky but the number of times I get farkled when rolling with 3 dice in play feels disproportionately high. The odds of getting just a single 1 or 5 is 30% for a single die so with 3 dice in play there should be a pretty low risk of a farkle given there are additional scoring options with 3 dice.

🌒 s/Movies

here to recommend probably one of my favorite movies of all time — “Annyoung, sayonara”. The acting is alright, the story is simplistic and ends weirdly, but there’s just something so beautiful about it, I can’t stop thinking of its many components, it’s scenes, it’s music.. it all comes together into what should’ve stayed as a film student’s work, but became one of my favorite things to watch, ever. [https link] Please give it a watch if you can, it deserves so much more praise than what...

Stuck — I just learned ... am learning ... that when a plane arrives at the airport, if there is a thunderstorm in progress, they can't actually open the door. My first thought was: why not? Lightning is fine as long as you are near something that will take the strike, usually a building with a lightning rod. And then I realized, oh. If there's a storm you really don't want to be near a large poorly grounded metal object, like a plane. So it totally makes sense that the ground staff have to...

Got an answer from the Mosquito Atlas ( citizen science project). The mosquito sent in is a female of the Aedes annulipes group, with a catch date of 28.05.2024. The online map does not show the entry yet, probably not updated yet. Here is the link again: [https link] have to sent in more mosquitoes; from different localities. when leaving the house I just take some small plastic jars with me in case there are some flying around....

🌒 s/OpenBSD

Have tried OpenBsd a few times and liked it, but what holds me back is lack of support for liba/vaapi etc. I find myself wondering why this is a hurdle for OpenBsd as all of the other BSD family have it implemented without issue? Maybe someone could throw some light onto what makes it an obstacle?
