I've been a bit lately getting into music, mostly live playing. I've been gathering some hardware synths, I have a guitar and well... most of the software for all these synths is Windows or Mac. No Linux. My latest addition, a Novation Circuit Tracks, has its software run as a webapp, using some kind of "WebMIDI" implementation. In Linux it reads, and allows some things, but when you try to upload a whole pack or a big sample, it fails. I thought "Oh, well, another for the Windows VM". Some...

Given the number of times I've just been farkled on rolls with 3 or 4 none held dice I can only conclude I'm unluck AF. LOL.

Mental Gymnastics: Hacking Up Simple Gemini Games β€” Surprize! 'Simple' things turn out to be much more complicated than they should be. This is my second go around: first time was spellbinding, which I implemented it as a specialized CGI program with a bunch of adjacent programs and scripts. While that worked, it required keeping track of a lot of details, scripts and cron jobs, and is so specialized that it's entirely useless for anything else. So this time around I was going to be smart. I...

The Lackrack begins! I've just finished putting together a lackrack with casters, as well as a top and bottom table surface. Next up is a patch panel, used Cisco WS-C3650, re-cased used Lenovo TS460, UPS, industrial 5v power supplies, and as many spare Raspberry Pis in 3D printed rackmount enclosures as I dare. The beefiest system will be running NetBSD and Xen for virtualization, leveraging ZFS on the storage. 64 GB of RAM and several WD Reds should do nicely. I'm thinking Kubernetes/...

I have started an interesting experiment: A Gemini frontend to my personal knowledge management system, Knowfox. [https link] Knowfox Knowfox stores all content as Markdown. This makes it easy to convert to Gemtext and display it. Saving content through a Titan request is a bit more involved, as I have to strip out the navigation and convert Gemtext back to Markdown. I have a local implementation working, as a Python CGI script behind GmCapsule, working against the Knowfox REST API....

Anyone else trying out making a gingerbug to make carbonated drinks at home? I'm used to making kvas here but not my own starter for the fermentation process. Just started a bug today and hope I get somewhere. I had a lot of fun working with yogurt once opon a time. When Dannon said they were going to patent their yogurt I was like, hoist up the jolly rodger we be taking some of that in the name of the king....

β€” farkle-duplicate.gmi

Duplicate page when submitting empty query string? β€” When starting today's game, the response was duplicated (see attachment). Otherwise everything worked normally. It does say "empty query string" in the second part, perhaps that's a clue. I'm still keeping my auto-prompt setting on so the first "farkle/app" will have an empty query string on it.

Dice Poker -- a new Gemini dice game (alpha) β€” [gemini link] A 5-dice poker game, inspired by @gritty. During each of 10 rounds you can hold any of the dice to build the best hand, and roll the remaining dice. You specify which dice to hold by their values, not their position! It's a little rough, and uses cgisesh (which is WIP) to keep state, so apologies if it breaks... But give it a shot!

πŸŒ’ s/farkle

Farkle is too hard β€” I'm not sure I'm right here, but hear me out. I just made it to second place, so I don't think I'm just blaming my poor luck on the game when I say that getting high scores is harder than it should be. The issue isn't the number of points, obviously. It's that aside from collecting ones and fives and occasionally three of a kind, it's really hard to get a roll that scores anything. I've gone multiple games without any of those roles, and the only reason I made it to the...

Pascal and files. β€” I am looking for a guide to use text files in freepascal. I am looking to make a gemtext to html tool because it sounds like a good project. The link conversation is going to be a challenge but I am looking forward to it.

β€” tilde.cafe/~stack/cgisesh/live/cgitest (tilde.cafe)

Got CGISESH working. Simple demo. β€” Click on the link; the cgi will keep track of how many times you visit (refresh to see the counter go up). If my cgisesh server is running, of course. This simple cgi uses cgisesh to keep session information for each user (visit count in this simple example). cgisesh is a minimal in-memory key-value server designed to provide per-user session data for Gemini CGI...

Just exploring going back to cassette tapes as a useful medium. Never thought I'd be doing that having been at the tail end of the 8-track till today's streaming but I want to own my music again and I like the ease of use and low expense of it. Anyone else looked back at the cassette?

RK3399 SBC as OpenBSD Desktop? So I’ve read the excellent article from exotic silicon dot com, the instructions they give seems easy enough to follow. Anyone tried any of the RK3399 boards with OpenBSD? Building your own BL31 (this is the dreaded ARM trusted firmware) from source is damn interesting, I bet they will never ever let you do that for snapdragon or Apple Mx. Anyone tried Tow-Boot on one of these boards? How about root on nvme drive? I guess for a desktop, all I β€œreally” need is...

cgisesh - a tiny cgi session manager for games TLDR: I am making a minimal in-memory "session database server" for keeping track of user data, ideal for games. Any thoughts? Every time I try to make a quick-and dirty CGI game or sketch out a simple application, I get really frustrated. Gemini conviniently provides user certificates which can be used to track sessions, but things get complicated very fast. I am making a minimal subsystem for keeping track of user-associated data, ideal for...

πŸŒ’ s/OpenBSD

How sucky is OpenBSD installation for the first time? I managed to boot up my old laptop (An 1.8ghz Acer from 2008-ish?), and I thought I’d give OpenBSD a crack on it. What do I need to be looking out for, coming from a MacOS / Linux background?
