10tb cheap drives — folks i remember someone found 10tb cheap hard drives somewhere, maybe on ebay? or maybe you know where to get sech drives? i found some drives used for 5 years in data center, but refubrished and with 5 years warranty. is it possible? and they contain helium instead of air. have you heard of such a technology? thank you.
I had an idea the other day: I sometimes have to transfer files to heavily closed off Windows PCs (Corporate IT and whatnot) and that is a PITA. Why not connect a Arduino Pro micro to it that presents itself as a HID Keyboard, and then feed the arduino from my laptop with the data over serial. The arduino can open a CMD box, do a "copy con" and then type the extents of the file, do a Ctrl-Z, and there you are. Also sending a binary as base64 and then using the Windows built-in base64 decoder...
Status Report: 30 days of Duolingo — I am actually on day 33 of my streak. Overall, I am pretty happy with Duolingo, which I've learned to really appreciate, in spite of my initial negative feelings. Ignoring minor UI issues and occasional lock-ups (very rare now that advertising has gone away), the curriculum is extremely well designed. New words and conjugations are introduced in a way that rarely overloads my brain, and the spaced repetition is perfectly worked out for retention. It's a...
i bought a playdate console awhile ago and its pretty fun to play around with. i might buy a ouya console at some point because i have a thing for obscure game consoles and computers.
Examples of handling TOFU and client certificates with mbedTLS (in C)? — As a rite of passage I've decided to make a Gemini client in C, and as I'm new to SSL/networking, I have no idea how to handle TOFU or client certificates with mbedTLS. Has anyone else specifically made a gemini client with it? Or would you recommend that I try to figure out another SSL library? I avoided OpenSSL because the documentation seemed incomprehensible, but mbedTLS' documentation isn't much better. As an aside, I...
Play — One particular memory from my childhood has been present lately. Dad. Play with me. No. Men don’t play. Play with your mother. Why would I lower myself to the floor and pretend the figures talk, He said ridiculing me. Men don’t play. Words that resonated with me growing up. I grew up fast, therefore I stopped playing fast. I forgot how to play, and what that meant. It sounded like a foreign word to me. I never spoke the words, I want to play. Other kids would say, you wanna play? Play?...

Dwarf Fortress — Dwarf Fortress is so much fun. It's complex enough to warrant lots of replay, and really lets you imagine and enjoy the world-gen for the fortress you're piloting. Unless you're playing the steam version, it also really scratches the ASCII itch. Reminds me of the good old days with nethack, alphaman, zzt, megazeux and the like.... but as a game with modern levels of depth and scope. Plus there's all sorts of cool thoughts there about what constitutes an emergent story, or...
pmos on jolla — tried pmbootstrap first time today. it knew about jolla device, only in edge, but alas the device works only under vendor kernel 3.4. also i guess it is not possible to install pmos to emmc on this device, it can only booted bf issuing a command when connected to the computer in fastboot mode. i wanted to install sxmo, and sxmo booted once, but i saw its screen only for two seconds, then it went black and volume or power buttons didn't work, i guess device was hung. sxmo with...
Added DOXX DOXXED AXLED APEXED APOPLEXED Thanks @gritty ! Note: even though APOPLEX is technically archaic, I've always loved the word in all the meanings of APOPLEXY...
Does anyone else feel icky when it comes to language exchanges? I'm selfish and just wanted to find Koreans who wanted to speak to me in Korean. How does one navigate exchanging a language when it feels more efficient to work for money and then exchange the money for language lessons 100% in the target language? But then, how does one find friends when one is only ever paying for the language and natives' time? How does it ever stop being transactional? I'm probably just way too jaded and...
Count of solved words now displayed — As per @skyjake 's suggestion, the list of solved words is now preceded by the word count. The leaderboard is updated every 5 minutes, and is a little behind. Enjoy!
My first Astrobotany plant! [gemini link]
Coming back after switching laptop to LMDE. It was way too easy to just import the certificate and I feel awkward because I didn't just do it immedaitely after the post-install updates.
Anyone know what happened to spam.works? I came back after a few months off and can't connect to the server anymore? Does anybody know where I can access the content?
Bonjour @Nono et toute la compagnie !
@admin Thanks !
Dejé de fumar el 2 de Enero. Entonces empecé a caminar 10k pasos.

Now play any day's puzzle in 🗺 Where in the World? game! — I finally got around to adding the ability to play any day's puzzle in my geography guessing game Where in the World?! I also added "Go to Next puzzle" links after you have finished one. This makes it really easy to go on a geography guessing binge and play the 500+ puzzles that already exist!
My Journey Begins — I only found Gemini last night, and yet already I begin my journey. My maiden voyage: Create a Gemini client using only Java. I shall keep you posted, Geminauts.
Translation Considered Harmful — I speak two languages fluently. The first one I learned like everyone does - with adults correcting and cajoling me along the way. When I went to school, I started learning English, but after 3 years I has learned next to nothing - alphabet, some grammar rules, some words. But I was unable to put a sentence together in real-time. I then moved to the US, when I realized that no, I could not understand anything, and what little I could say, the locals found very...
One — Greetings. All things start from humble beginnings; and this journey into geminispace is no exception. Hopefully my contributions will expand once I'm generally more familiar.
Added a shitton of words suggested by you in-game... Too many to bother listing.
I've recently been thinking about getting back on Tumblr. There just isn't a good FOSS/Fediverse alternative. The twitter-copycat interface of Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, Soapbox etc just doesn't cover everything like people seem to think it does. I don't know, though, maybe I just miss how internet communities were in the late 2000s. It seems most people online today are there for entirely different reasons. Back in 2009 if someone added you somewhere, they wanted to connect. Today they're...
— taichara.smol.pub/ttrpg-lindwyrm (taichara.smol.pub)
so I made a mini "basic D&D" — Last weekendish I decided hell with it, I'd try to smush a take on "Basic D&D" into one 16-page minizine format (1/8-letter pages). After a lot of scribbling right onto a blank mockup minizine, and tweaking some things here and there, I got one. Spent the middle of the week typing and formatting, and here we are: Lindwyrm. It's pretty loosey-goosey but I'm okie with that, lol.
