In London in particular, and probably the whole UK, Amy Winehouse felt omnipresent at this point in time. Not just musically, but in the news constantly to the point where it seemed like it should overshadow her music. So it'll come as no surprise to anyone who has read my previous posts that I mostly ignored it, feeling like I heard enough in pubs and shops on taxis that I'd probably heard it all. Of course, I hadn't. It only took until track 3 to hit the first track I didn't know. 

Track 3 is the one that's second line is 'What kind of fuckery is this?', which feels like it comes out of nowhere, in a way. But not really - we've already had Rehab. It just stands out compared to the slightly more retro instrumentation & backing vocals of the track. It's a trace of the personality that she's remembered for, and it comes across throughout the album.

It's not for me though. The bathetic strings, the schmaltzy backing vocals - it's frequently too overwrought. This one goes in the pile of albums I'm glad this project made me sit down and listen to - it has some great moments - but even if my past self wrote it off for dumb reasons, they weren't totally wrong, either.
