My favourite way to go in to albums for this project is totally blank - no idea of the context, or the artist, or how the album was received. I clicked on the 'Wikipedia' link for this one, which told me that this was released just 2 weeks before Leonard Cohen died... which is some pretty big context. Note to self: don't click the Wikipedia links before listening.

It's not that the lyrics try to make that context a secret though. It's persistently, overtly about dying, or at its most positive, reflecting on life. But there's some extra motivation to dig a bit deeper in to an album by someone with a long career who knows they are going to die. If this was just someone recording an album about death, you'd listen slightly differently. Or at least I would.

The first track (the title track) is promising, but as a whole it drags on a bit too long. Not because of the themes, but Cohen's delivery across the album is so samey. The instrumentation is simple and excellently played - The violin on Travelling Light is a mid album highlight - but the talk/singing doesn't pull me in. This is the only album of his that I've heard - it could be that delivery that people love him for.
