I've bounced off Tom Waits at least twice. First was hearing 'Big in Japan' on Punkorama 4. I was there for NOFX and Ten Foot Pole and Bouncing Soles - who was this guy shouting in to a megaphone? That's not *punk*. The second time was years later, when someone sent me their playlist, 'A Beginners Guide to Tom Waits', which was perhaps not well curated for the intended audience.

This album is try number three, and it just clicked right from the start. Track 1 was what I expected, but the sparse instruments and kept me interested. Then track 2 is a bit fuller, a bit rockier. By the end of track 5, all you know is that you have no idea what's coming. It could go anywhere, and I'm happy to go wherever it does.
