The thing I read most commonly about Bob Dylan now is that the reason to go and see him live is so that you can say you saw him. In particular, his voice isn't what it used to be. As someone who is only really familiar with the earlier Bob Dylan albums, Time out of Mind surprised me by how much that already appeared to be happening 25 years ago. The songs are *fine*, but the vocals are offputtingly samey.

Still, songs like Standing in the Doorway stand out for the lyrics and excellently varied backing band, while others like Million Miles feel like a tedious slog through contemporary blues. And slog is the word. Maybe for Dylan fans, the long tracks are a chance to dwell in the moods the songs create, but for me they're just too slow and drawn out. Even album high point Not Dark Yet, doesn't really warrant its 6:29 runtime. Maybe it worked better in a live setting. 25 years ago.
