Simple explanation + visualization of how the depth of field is affected by certain camera "parameters". Good complement to Chris Bray's aperture video.

Parameters that affect the DoF:

• Distance to subject :: distance from the sensor to the focal plane
• Focal length :: distance from the sensor to the (main) lens
• Aperture :: size of the iris' hole

How they affect the DoF:

• Longer distance to subject => wider DoF; shorter distance to subject => shallower DoF
• Longer focal length => shallower DoF; shorter focal length => wider DoF
• Larger aperture => shallower DoF; Smaller aperture => wider DoF
