3 Why We Need Gopher |

5 The web has shown to not work towards spreading information, but towards |

6 restricting what is there. As a result of its design flaws we only have |
|
|
|
7 three web engines left to write a client for it, there is a cult of |
|
|
|
8 cruft around designing extension for HTTP and of course there is the |
|
|
|
9 topic of what content is served. |

11 Try using the web using tor. Everywhere a strange clown will appear: |

17 Using gopher, the protocol is defined and does not know of any arbitary |

18 optimisations for speeding up serving complex documents which execute |

19 scripting language snippets in strange and now nearly cpu-opcode-low |

20 ways. It is possible to write a client in a simple shell script, in |
|
|
|
21 every language in under five minutes. Writing a server is even easier. |

23 Then let us discuss openly why we need gopher: |

25 * To present all information in the world in an unobstrusive way. |
|

26 * To be able to communicate with Mars[0] |
|

27 * To safely communicate over tor with defined metadata. Nothing is hidden. |
|
|

28 * To show that there is an alternative to the web, which can do the same. |
|
|
|
29 * Showing this allows different viewpoints on the web and the |
|
|
|
30 Internet. New ideas can spark from this. |
