SMOLNET PORTAL home about changes
No, not _that_ radio shack. My wife likes to refer to my collection
of old computers and parts as 'Radio Shack', in a mildly chiding
way. But that pile of erstwhile junk comes in handy at times.

The latest was just this past weekend, when I replaced my faulty
ISP-supplied, backdoor-infested wireless router with one of my older
ones. But it's a common theme for me to reuse old computers or
components, rather than buy new, if at all possible. Even when I do
have to buy a desktop or laptop, I look for refurbished systems
first.

I also like to keep lots of adapters on hand - one of the most
useful is a USB-to-ps2 adapter that connects an older ps2 mouse and
keyboard to my laptop.

Speaking of keyboards, those I _do_ buy new, but very infrequently.
I prefer the Happy Hacking keyboards, I have four and won't need
anymore for the foreseeable future, as they are built very well. The
cheap keyboards and mice that typically come with refurbished
systems I keep and hand out to family when they need one.

There are some limits. Several years ago I got rid of my last CRT
monitor - it was just taking up too much space, and I still have
three spare flat screen monitors. One is decent enough to be used as
a spare desktop monitor, two smaller ones useful when I want to
install an OS on something and just need a console. So I just
couldn't rationalize keeping the big clunky CRT around anymore.
