|I had a 20+ year old Saturn that ran great. Its big problem was
|with the ignition and security system. Several times it stranded
|me because it would randomly decide not to start. I got to my wits
|end trying to figure it out, and three different mechanics
|couldn't fix it either, so off to the junkyard it went,
|unfortunately. It was really a shame because once it got running,
|it drove perfectly.

|smoked out at 300k miles.. lol But the last few years I had it
|that ignition was no longer a problem.

|Late 90s, Chevy used a resistor value to verify the
|correct key is in as part of the imobilizer/security. The
|key has a resistor in it. You can clip the wires in the
|harness and solder in the resistor to bypass the
|immobilizer. I had to do this to get my remote starter
|going in a 97 Monte Carlo. It was reasonably simple to do.

|do is find the value of the key and put a resistor in the
|ignition wire to bypass the one on the key.

|I had the same issue with my 2003 Ion. Turn it on, pull out the
|wires, snip the white one. Key lock disabled. Ended up selling
|it to my friend who still drives it to this day when I hurt my
|back. Wonderful cars. Absolute bare minimum, but honestly that's
|what I want in a car. Less things to break, but yeah that
|security system they installed on them was absolute trash.

|You had to let it sit for 10 minutes to let the security system
|reset. And not touch it for those entire 10 minutes, or you'll
|screw yourself. Got to the point I'd go outside 10 minutes
|before I had to go to work and start it.

|and it was night and day to the 2000s versions.

|That's because the other early Saturn SL, SC and SW's made were
|designed from the ground up. The later Saturn's LS, Vue, Ion,
|Outlook all came from GM parts bin. My dad's Saturn outlook is
|the same as a GMC Acadia. I'm not a fan of the early SOHC. Owned
|four DOHC's. My 95 sl2 was one of the first turbocharged
|intercooled Saturn's in the country at the time back in '99.

|I got a fully-equipped 2008 Aura because the 2007 model got the
|North American Car of the Year Award. My thought process was that
|the newer model would have **even better** features than the
|award-winning version. Never had a problem with it...EVER!!
|Then, in 2010, I got slammed from behind by a speeding drunk
|driver going somewhere between 80mph & 100mph. Thankfully, my
|Aura had the same frame build as the 2007 model and that helped
|save me from getting crushed inside. And, the OnStar service
|automatically called to get emergency crews out to me, effectively
|saving my life. I don't care about all the crap people have said
|about Saturn cars. That 2008 Aura kept me safe enough to, 14
|years later, eventually be able to respond to this reddit post.
|All in all, I'd say that was probably my best purchase...EVER!!

|I got into a very serious accident in a Saturn. The crumple zones
|did their job. I was so happy I lived, I just bought the same
|car. Would you believe 2 weeks later, that Saturn and I were in
|another, nearly identical (rear ended at high speed) car accident.
|I was fine to everyone’s surprise. Well, you can guess what I
|bought. A 98 Saturn L200. It still runs fine and I haven’t been
|in another accident!

|years, and changed the oil maybe 5 times, sold it to my best friend
|for $80. He drove it for a year, sold it to his brother, who wrecked
|it in the snow a year later. They're tough cars lol

|In 2007 I found a 93 s-10 for $500 on Craigslist and used it as a
|work truck for a couple of years. Sold it to my buddy for $400 and
|he put some new doors on it and sold it to someone else. Back in
|2020 I was walking into a grocery store and recognized a sticker
|on a truck that looked like my old work truck. It was. I talked to
|the guy in the parking lot for a while. It had over 500,000 miles
|on the original transmission when he got it. His dad had a truck
|just like it growing up and he fixed my old $500 beater up into
|something brand new.

|The guy inherited the shop from his father, who had taken good care
|of my mother's car.  Class acts, both of them, never overcharged and

|Nah, they're generally good cars. Between my kids and myself, we've
|had 4. Sold one because it was old/high mileage and needed a lot of
|repairs due to that, but I couldn't afford it. Scrapped one, it was
|beat to hell when I bought it as a learn-to-drive car for one of my
|kids, expected it to last a few months. Lasted several years and
|could have kept going if we'd put a bunch of money into repairs
|(opted not to cuz it was beat to hell haha). We still have the other
|2, and they're going strong (knock on wood).

|plastics. I’ve seen them get punched and pop back into shape. So as
|long as you can keep the guts from rusting out they can stay around
|for a while.

|When I bought a Saturn the salesman kneed the fender good and hard
|and it popped right out and you couldn’t tell. I found out later
|that although they are plastic, there is still a subframe make out
|of metal that shows evidence of the damage. I think back and wonder
|how many cars that man sold that later appeared to have been
|involved in concealed accidents.

|The Saturn Vue is basically a Honda Pilot with a Saturn body. It has
|a very reliable Honda engine and transmission. They are known to go
|200k+ miles with basic maintenance.

|It is not a Honda Pilot. The Pilot is a larger vehicle. There was no
|equivalent Honda vehicle. What you’re remembering is that the V6
|models are powered by a Honda V6 engine and automatic transmission.
|The four cylinder models are powered by GM powertrains. The chassis,
|suspension, brakes, steering, fuel system, interior, etc all GM.

|2006 3.5 V6 is my daily driver. Only 133,000 miles and I'm the
|second owner. Paid $4700 for it in 2019. I change the oil about
|every 4,000 miles or so and keep it clean as fuck. I love it and
|will drive it into the dirt. Not many people know it has the same
|honda engine and transmission from Odyssey's and Pilots for
|2004-2007

|I've lived in Los Angeles (super progressive, overall), I've lived
|in Salt Lake City (fairly progressive, more independent leaning),
|and I've spent quite a bit of time in various cities like Chicago
|and Boston, and I've only ever seen a car in hardcore progressive
|stickers a handful of times. On the other hand, the amount of
|crazy conservative sticker cars I've seen is off the charts.
|Maybe Portland specifically attracts that level of crazy on the
|progressive side.

|I'm a combat veteran as well, and this feels spot on. Men are
|also trained by society at the least, and families can also
|train us not to cry or express our emotions. I know that this
|lead me to punching things like my fridge and then I moved
|onto a 4x4 stud so as not to damage my appliance. I guess
|what I was trying to get at is that I've trained myself to
|just pull over (for about 30 seconds) if the road is a single
|lane so as to just let that which is upsetting me to go away.
|On larger freeways it's more difficult, but getting over to a
|slower lane for a short time can really help. I'm sorry that
|he's suffering (which obviously overflows onto others) but
|with time and effort it can be reduced. I know I still have my
