What is something that people pretend to like but secretly hate ?

|Pretending someone is nice after they die. No they were a dick, being
|dead doesn't change that
|u/AsteroidMike - 1 month
|
|Always felt it was really odd to have “respect” for the dead if they
|turned out to be an awful person for their life. They did nothing to
|earn respect or kind words ever so no one’s obligated to do the same
|once they finally go.
|u/Shanghaipete - 1 month

|Speaking ill of the dead is one of the few ways we can get any form
|of justice. It infuriated me to see newspapers giving Colin Powell
|the kid-glove treatment in his obituary. Statesman, my ass. The
|sonofabitch lied about WMD, and nothing else he did will wipe that
|stain away. If we can't say so now, when can we?

|Reminds me of a friend’s uncle who said bad things (sprinkled in with
|the nice things, while still trying to be respectful) about his
|father/my friend’s grandpa at his funeral. A bunch of family members
|either got uncomfortable or straight up tried to get him off the
|podium during the speech, even though… he was telling the truth? I
|100% agree with you on this one.

|My uncle is like this with my mom. My mother was a drug addict and I
|went through almost ten years of abuse bc of her. It’s been 6 years
|since she died and my uncle still tells me as much as possible that
|she was a good sister and she was a good mom. No, when she died she
|was the person who almost killed her child and family members
|multiple times, not the young kid you chose to remain her for. He
|won’t see her for who she really is, and it pisses me off bc I’m
|living proof of her horrible existence. I literally can’t walk
|correctly because of her and he still somehow thinks she was a good
|person who just “had a hard life”. I was the one with a hard life.
|u/IMA-Witch - 1 month
|
|I’m so sorry you had to endure that awful situation. It’s really
|sad when your mom is/was a horrible person. You are robbed of so
|much. Your uncle isn’t being fair to you. Your pain is legitimate
|and nobody has the right to minimize it or deny facts. I have a
|niece who is a drug addict, and I will not say good things about
|her if she dies before I do. I hate her for all the pain she has
|inflicted on our family, especially my parents. She has never
|apologized or admitted all the shit she did. Her dad has disowned
|her. Her mom makes excuses. Families are torn apart by these people
|so why do we owe them nice words when they finally get the hell out
|of our lives?
|u/jellopudnpops - 1 month

|I’ve spoke at 2 funerals and gave legitimacy instead of baby powder

| When a former schoolmate(bully) suddenly died from a medical thing,
|my mom first asked me if we were friends and I said ick no she was a
|B. My mom said good because she’s dead and explained. And I said
|something like ‘okay. I mean sorry to her family. But It doesn’t
|bother me.’ I still went to the funeral and remember seeing all these
|people around me crying and honoring this girl but I didn’t offer
|anything because I wasn’t going to pretend I cared or that she was a
|decent person to me.

|Oh yea it's awful. I don't want them to have to do it either. I don't
|like if someone tells them it's my Birthday without me knowing
|either, especially if your birthday was two fucking weeks ago. All
|off a sudden you hear "haaaapppppyy bir..." "ohh god damnit not
|again" lol
|u/utexfan18 - 1 month
|
|I hate this so much. I have severe anxiety at times and generally
|hate receiving attention. My family used to do this because they
|knew it would make me uncomfortable. It finally took me speaking up
|and asking if putting me on the verge of panic attacks was really
|that amusing to them and threatened that I would start celebrating
|my bday by myself for them to stop. Who are these really for? The
|workers can't love dropping everything and singing to random
|strangers multiple times a day and I can't imagine most people
|enjoy being sung to like that. Is it just for friends and family to
|get amusement out of seeing someone being uncomfortable on their
|bday?
|u/239h - 1 month
|
|Yes yes it makes me so anxious I'm sorry ur family did it anyways
|u/80sixit - 1 month

|
|It's to drive up dessert sales. If they bring you a slice of cake
|and sing to you then the rest of the table is likely to buy
|dessert instead of sitting there watching you eat cake alone.
|u/Immediate_Employ_571 - 1 month
|
|You're right as a server we hate that crap, you want to see 5
|servers standing around talking scatter and find something super
|important to do right that minute? Ask for people to go sing for
|a birthday.
|u/pm_me_x-files_quotes - 1 month
|
|Same. It took me years of pleading for my family not to sing/get
|people to sing for me before they finally stopped. It took me
|getting sung to after being assured I wouldn't be, me fleeing the
|scene, and having an anxiety attack in another room before it
|finally sunk in for my mom. I don't know what my mom told
|everybody else afterward, but whenever someone brings up singing
|"Happy Birthday" to me, my mom immediately shoots them down, but
|in a fun way. Somehow my pleading wasn't cutting it, so now she
|does it for me.
|u/NightGod - 1 month
|
|Coworkers tried that with me once. We had a team lunch at
|Applebee's and they thought it would be funny to let them know it
|had been my birthday a couple of days before but obviously hadn't
|been paying attention when I had been telling them about who I was
|as a person. Note: at this place, when they did the birthday song,
|every employee in the building came out to sing it and they each
|brought a helium balloon on a string that had a loop in the end
|they put on your wrist and then give you a dessert. I wore them
|while I ate my dessert, joking about how it made my arms feel
|lighter. As we got up to leave, my manager asked if I was going to
|leave the balloons behind at the restaurant. Aghast, I of course
|said I could never do such a thing, not after the team went through
|all that effort to make it happen for me. So I wore them on my
|wrist the rest of the day. Drove back to work with them there and
|my buddies in the car with the windows down halfway (used the
|window locks to make sure they stayed there) so they could all
|share the joy of my new balloons with me as they blew around the
|car and in their faces (in retrospect, that part was stupid and
|unsafe, but funny since it turned out OK). Sat at my cubicle with
|them on. Went to the bathroom with them on. Left them taped to my
|desk and then my buddies and I inhaled the helium the next day. I
|don't know if it was an official policy or something, but they
|never did birthdays at team lunch meetings again after that
|u/ninnypogger - 1 month

|I just bring the dessert with a candle, smile and say happy birthday,
|and walk away. There was one time though where a woman came in three
|nights in a row with different people and they ordered her dessert
|with a candle because it was her “birthday weekend.” This woman was
|in her 50s. We only found this out because the runner said “again?”

|Three different kids and none of them like each other so they

|First night it was probably her kids, the other two nights it

|She probably just really liked the food and had different
|people taking her out for her birthday each night. IDK, as a
|restaurant, I think I would be OK with someone coming in with a
|completely different party each night, all ordering full meals
|and then getting a free piece of cake because they were
|genuinely out celebrating her birthday
|u/ninnypogger - 1 month
|
|I don’t have a problem with it but it was just weird to me.

|Work events outside normal business hours. My current company does all
|parties during business hours and it's fantastic. We get done with work
|at noon the day of the party or event and then we are free to hang out
|as much or as little as we want for the rest of the work day and leave
|whenever. By contrast to every other company I've worked for has
|these mandatory fun activities that are a huge waste of time. Driving
|45 minutes one way to go do ax throwing or whatever lame-brained idea
|HR has come up with from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on a Saturday to

|generalizations but this is how it broke down: Young people, like 40

|Networking events! Everyone acts like they're excited to meet new

|I'm 36 and not only is my anxiety severely reduced now, but I

|actually spend time talking to me now instead of finding an
|excuse to walk away. And as a single man, it does make it a LOT
|easier to get dates now, which is exactly what I needed because
|dating apps are a bane and they've legitimately ruined dating for

|never force yourself to do the anxious things you used to have to

|Workplace small talk. Most people act like they're interested in the

|u/jiggajawn - 1 month

|I feel like small talk can lead to good talk. It just sucks when

|There's nothing wrong with being uninterested in other people's

|I always liked workplace small talk. I've always been a little bit
|of a joker and small talk gave me lots of material. One time I was
|traveling for work - going to some seminars. A group of us would
|meet up after the seminars and go out to dinner together and then
|move to a bar for a few drinks. There was this one lady, really
|nice, but she had to dominate the conversations both at dinner and at
|the bar. One evening I ended up at the bar with her. Everyone else
|had gone back to their rooms. I asked her if she really liked Mrs.
|Smith's history class. She got this confused look on her face and
|said "huh?." I said, "You sat front row center and interacted with
|her a lot. I never knew if you really liked the class or if you were
|interacting for a better grade." More confusion - "How do you know
|that?" I said I always sat in the back of the room on the right.
|Next to Ted and just behind Martha. More confusion - "We went to
|school together?" I told her I wasn't surprised she didn't remember
|me. Our class had 500 students and I just had the one class with
|you. All this information had come from listening to her for several
|hours, I just fed it back to her. She had no memory of telling us
|all of this. I still laugh thinking about how she went home and got

|eat it. Pregnant? No sushi or fish for you. Child? None for you! Not to
|mention the toxicity going up year by year in the ocean and high levels
|of mercury in certain fish naturally... Ive only had bad experiences
|with seafood.

|Bob Dylan. Take note that whenever he's discussed, it's the same
|thing. "What a great poet!" What you *never hear* is "great singer",
|"great performer", or "great guitarist" and rarely is it "great
|songwriter". A poet with that many sonic liabilities should do
|humanity a real solid and stay within the confines of the printed page.
|u/TheDadThatGrills - 1 month
|
|He did humanity a real solid with his song "Hurricane", which was the
|fourth most successful single *of the decade* and helped lead to a
|conviction of an innocent man being overturned. [https://en.wikipedia

|i/Hurricane_(Bob_Dylan_song)) I'm not fond of Bon Dylan's music
|either, and I wasn't alive during his heyday, but the man genuinely
|achieved greatness.
