|Many malacologists (scientists who study mollusks) use "snail" to
|refer to all land-living gastropods. The creatures we refer to as
|slugs actually often have internal shells. I'm not saying this to
|argue. I get that calling slugs snails is like calling tomatoes fruit.
|Technically accurate, but still weird. I just think it's a fun fact.

|It's the esters and phenols made by the yeast during fermentation

|
|Yup. This is a standard trick gardeners use to get rid of slugs.
|Pint of beer in some Tupperware in your garden. Job done. Needs to
|be deeper than shown in the video though, or the slugs just drink it
|and make pissed up wavy slime trails across your garden.
|u/TheEyeDontLie - 1 month
|
|I double up with the cardboard trick. Lay down some cardboard
|(where you want the benefits of mulch or weed killing) and the
|slugs crawl under it to make their homes. Leave the beer next to
|it. Although if you have chickens. Cardboard gets flipped over,
|chickens get lunch, you drink ths beer yourself.

|We are having a huge problem with slugs at our place. I think

|u/CrazyMike419 - 1 month

|Salt burns slugs. A sprinkle of salt will kill them (quite
|horrifically). You can't salt the ground as it would also
|kill your plants so bung a tablespoon or 2 over the
|corpses of your vanquished foes... any sluggs that come to
|visit will die in seconds.

|They can cause a traffic hazard called the slug-slick. You
|run over a slug, and then other slugs come to feast on it,
|who in turn also get run over..., more slugs come along and
|repeat until eventually there is a mass of squashed slug
|corpses so big that cars slide on them and crash.

|u/dm_your_nevernudes - 1 month
|
|That was a slug from Australia. Everyone knows not to eat
|things from Australia.
|u/Salvad0rkali - 1 month
|
|Tbf that parasite exists in slugs and snails within the U.S as
|well. The article details this. He contracted “rat lungworm
|disease” which is a form of a parasite that if it travels to
|the brain can cause meningitis. Which is what happened to this
|kid. It’s not unheard of, or even that rare. Just cases tend
|to be more mild than poor fellas case here. Fun Fact:
|Apparently a common way of contracting the parasite according
|U.S Food and Drug Administration, is people leaving the caps
|off the water bottles/canteens. Then infected slugs or snails
|crawl in for a sip, folks drink it. Boom Ratlung. EDIT: As
|was pointed out below, it’s only when the parasite gets lost
|in the human host and travels to the brain does it cause
|meningitis. A technicality but a big one, the difference being
|have potentially several shitty weeks and the other possibly
|ending up like this poor guy from Australia. Thank you for
|that!

|I set my outdoor cat's food dish on top of a salt block.
|It only took two days for the block to get so covered with

|u/Salvad0rkali - 1 month

|I’m only working with what information is provided in the
|article about the parasite. I’m not an expert by any
|means. The article lists a few different species it’s able
|to “effect”, though it seems birds are the intended hosts.
|It’s possible it could make domestic pets ill, but it
|doesn’t seem like the intended breeding grounds for them.
|So my assumption is they would either pass through or die
|in non-prospective hosts. If you find out anything more or
|contrary to this I’d love to know!

|Here's the thing. You said an "orca is a dolphin." Is it in
|the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who
|is a scientist who studies dolphins, I am telling you,
|specifically, in science, no one calls orcas dolphins. If
|you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't
|either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying
|"dolphin family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping
|of Cetacea, which includes things from porpoises to rorquals
|to narwhals. So your reasoning for calling an orca a dolphin
|is because random people "call the black and white ones
|dolphins?" Let's get sperm whales and belugas in there,
|then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not
|one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're
|both. An orca is an orca and a member of the dolphin family.
|But that's not what you said. You said an orca is a dolphin,
|which is not true unless you're okay with calling all
|members of the dolphin family dolphins, which means you'd
|call vaquitas, iniidae, and other sea mammals dolphins, too.

|Oh no, they do realize. If you ever had an garden in a slug-

|slugs, i'd go in the garden for an hour a day and just spike them
|(long nail attached to a stick from a broom), then dump them into
|buckets and eventually bring them to the trash-powerplant for
|cremation. I'd typically catch 5-600 per hour. 5-10 times as much
|when doing it around dusk. They are a pain in the ass and have
|virtually no predators. Fuckers can get 10-12cm long (up to 4.7
|inches) and you don't get their slime off your feet/shoes when you
|eventually step on them. besides that, they feed on everything that
|is holy in a garden (veggies + flowers) until non of it exist
|anymore. Nowadays i just add buckets to the garden, and have a
|permanent strainer standing close to it where i can put a empty
|bucket below and a dump a full bucket into easily. then dumb
|filtered out dead slugs into heavy duty trashbags for corps disposal
|/ cremation once a week. If you do it for 4 weeks, you start
|seeing results in the numbers and can enjoy the remaining 4-5 months
|of "summer".

|
|They drown in it. It’s an old gardener’s trick for controlling slugs
|and snails. Cut the bottom off of a beer can or a soda bottle, bury it
|in the ground so it’s flush with the dirt, and pour some beer on it.
|The slugs go apeshit over it, and they fall in and drown because the
|beer keeps them from sticking to the sides and climbing out. It
|works really well with smaller slugs, but obviously with giant ones
|like this you’d need more than a little soda bottle or something to
|catch them.
