|Curator here: I think the thing is that a lot curators work with
|the history of material culture, often hundreds if not 1000s of
|years old. Sometimes with what we do there are modern artists
|working in the same area but many if not most aren’t working
|with living artist. I think most of us come to realize that
|artists may know more about some technical skills of creation
|but we often know more about what got us here and historical
|technical modes in a way a lot of contemporary artists can’t
|articulate. In the end that’s why we as curators get paid—we’re
|supposed to take the broader view when no single individual
|artist would likely be able to. The problem with break dance
|professor is she’s clearly confused the two modes, which is
|particularly egregious when your area of study is still a
|thriving community. Granted I’m an expert in very old stuff but
|I do view the PhDification of such a relatively new cultural
|field with some suspicion.

|figure skating) it's not an absolute rating of your performance
|out of a total score it's how many judges voted for you over your
|opponent there were other breakers that scored as low as 1 and 2
|votes throughout the competition getting a 0 in breaking is
|something that's expected to happen
