|u/munkamonk - 1 month
|
|Right? What’s he going to mentor her in? How to abuse positions of

|I mean reading the article, it sounds like the judge is just a
|self-important douchebag who wanted to “teach her a lesson” for
|falling asleep in his boring ass courtroom because the field trip
|probably sucked. Doesn’t sound like he laid hands on her, or was
|even physically in her vicinity, just ordered her to be cuffed and
|make it *seem* like she was going to go to jail for …
|disrespecting him I guess? Obviously a wild overstep for the

|u/Nevada_Lawyer - 1 month
|
|I believe it’s called the judge’s inherent contempt power. Under
|the common law, the judge can basically be Judge Dredd and convict
|you and sentence you for contempt on the spot. Here in Vegas, one
|of the city court judges in our suburb Henderson who got elected
|was a former stripper. Someone told her in Court she should have
|stayed in her old job. Jail.
|u/Nevada_Lawyer - 1 month
|
|Oh! And a former family Court Judge, Assad, had a girlfriend
|show up to convey the information that her boyfriend wasn’t
|showing up for some order to show cause about her boyfriend’s
|custody case (not girlfriend’s kids). He had her detained and
|put in handcuffs and had her call the boyfriend to come with the
|kids or something he wouldn’t let her out. lol. Assad got in
|trouble for that one because the contempt power doesn’t allow
|you take non-parties to the case as hostages. Ironically he
|didn’t lose his judgeship till after 9/11 when people assumed
|because of his name he was Muslim. I think it was ironic because
|he was an Arab Christian son of refugee parents. Man, if you’ve
|ever had a coparent kidnap or otherwise withhold your children
|from you, I bet you’d love that hostage taking judge so fucking
|much. lol.
|u/AuroraFireflash - 1 month

|u/RTukka - 1 month
|
|Yeah, he tried to justify it as being a "scared straight"
|tactic, but he's a fucking judge. He shouldn't be playing
|fast and loose using his courtroom to try to replicate a
|notorious documentary/program that studies have shown was
|ineffective if not counterproductive to its stated goals.
|Also, from the way he talks, it feels to me like he
|_wanted_ an opportunity to make an example of someone to
|play out his Scared Straight role-play fantasy, and
|therefore I find it a bit suspicious that there just
|happened to be someone in the field trip group who kept
|falling asleep in his courtroom to give him that
|opportunity. I would not be surprised if he was outright
|lying about her falling asleep, particularly given that he
|makes comments about her "whole attitude and disposition"
|which is possibly code for "I didn't like the way she
|looked, and she didn't call me 'your honor' when she tried
|to defend herself against my false accusations."
|u/Mike-the-gay - 1 month
|
|You detain before you arrest because you don’t have enough to

|necessary? It's a teenager on a field trip vs . a judge on a

|I live just a few miles away from Marion, KS where that newspaper

|panel...of other judges. At least for once the dirty cops are

|u/krozarEQ - 1 month
|
|Worked in juvenile probation and detention. I've never heard of such.
|The jumpsuits are at the juvenile detention facility, not the
|courthouse. The juvenile facility has its own courtroom. The kids only
|go downtown (main courthouse) if it's a jury trial which isn't very
|often. In such a case their lawyer will have mom/dad/grandma bring
|some proper clothes they can put on before transfer. Maybe the
|courthouse has some adult jail clothes they can wear. Otherwise,
|someone from the facility would have to stop what they're doing to
|drive over there to deliver some Bob Barkers. That seems pointless
|really. There's nothing special about the clothes. They're ordered in
|bulk [from a brochure/website](https://www.bobbarker.com/valueline-
|jumpsuits-s3xl?quantity=1&color=86) and placed in a closet. It doesn't
|'change' anyone to put on a jumper. At least I've never seen that
|happen. I guess he could order a few pairs to keep around if he wants
|to make this a normal routine of his. I'm sure he got some lip out of
|her and that pissed him off. But all he's doing is wasting everyone's
|time, including those who have a real court date. Everyone else has to
|deal with lip every day. Part of the job. Don't know what area of law
|he presides over, but I'd wager to guess he doesn't normally have to
|deal with that. I've had kids try to attack our regular judges. At
|which point the judge just says something sarcastic, gets up and
|leaves. As for him knowing: I wouldn't expect him to know. That's not
|something he has to deal with but expects others to deal with it.
|Although that's something his bailiff signed on for, I guess. I don't
|see any chance of the juvenile ending up in detention and he better
|not expect someone over there to do an intake. Juvenile intakes are
|very time-intensive and there's zero reason to not have her stay in
|the custody of her guardian/parent unless something horrific is
|uncovered.

|Judges are really generally the scum of the earth. If you think a
|cop with a bruised ego is bad, a judge with a bruised ego is
|infinitely worse. I’ve had the misfortune of knowing several
|socially as well as professionally and they really believe to their
|core that everyone who isn’t a judge is a simpleton child who must
|be *disciplined*, even lawyers with a stronger legal education than
|themselves. This goes for even the most liberal judges. When I
|volunteered for the ACLU in college we worked with a woman who was
|sentenced to 90 days in jail for sneezing three times in a row
|during a custody hearing. It took over 4 years for the judge to face
|any discipline and I’ll always remember his smug, laughing face as
|we left that hearing. Ruining this woman’s life was literally

|I’m a lawyer. I’ve had a lot of decent judges who are fair and
|seem like normal down to earth people. I’ve also had absolute
|power tripping assholes. I’m in immigration and family courts
|though so I wouldn’t be surprised if the judges in criminal court
|are weirder.
|u/Master_of_Snek - 1 month
|
|See that’s what always got me.  The judges we would be
|investigating for serious acts of impropriety *were* all
|generally well-regarded members of the judiciary. Then one day
|they make a decision that seems entirely out of character, but
|members of their staff would detail a steady ethical decline
|over the course of years. Small comments here and there that
|suddenly, when looked back upon, would imply bias or
|predetermination.  I believe it’s a cursed position, and even
|the most well intentioned people succumb to a crushing egoism.
|I’ve seen enough to know that a judge is one of the most
|dangerous people you will ever meet, and the system they’re a
|part of *can* be easily leveraged to ruin your life in a
|blitzkrieg of legal troubles. By the time your case of judicial
|abuse gets to people like the ACLU your life/reputation/finances
|have already been effectively destroyed.

|I went to court once for a traffic citation (dismissed but not

|message. Judge takes a quick look and starts lecturing us:
|“Someone in this room has disrespected the court by parking
|their car in an illegal space that is clearly marked as . . . .
|Oh. Wait.” He reads further, sees the license plate number, and
|immediately drops the righteous tone. He says, “Bailiff, that’s
|my car. Here, take my keys and go move it, would you?” And then

|No kidding regarding judges being the scum of the earth. I was an
|alternate juror on a criminal trial. At the end of the trial,
|myself and the other alternate were not allowed to attend
|deliberations since they had any otherwise full jury pool. The
|judge required us to stay in his chambers for his personal
|entertainment till the deliberations were over. He held us captive
|for roughly an hour, and the entire time he acted if he was god's
|gift to morality and ethics. He did not want us to speak unless we
|were answering his questions. His primary message was that it
|didn't matter if the jury made the right decision, the defendant
|was convicted, and his life was irreparably damaged. He believed
|it simply shouldn't bother us at all. Now had the DA's actually
|brought real evidence, then it would have made some sense. The
|reality is that they had zero evidence to support their claim. It
|was simply one man's word against another, and the "victim" seemed
|like he was the one that should have been on trial. The judge did
|not care one bit about the facts presented during the case and
|would have gladly sent this guy to jail and ruined his life on
|zero evidence. The day did have a happy ending though as the
|jury decided not guilty. It still left me thinking how poorly this
|could have gone if the defendant didn't have a jury to decide the
|case.

|Like the majority of judges in this country. They're same as cops,
|just less of em. Many think of their courts as fiefdoms. I was in a
|courtroom where someone in the back sighed and rolled their eyes as
|they had been waiting to be called over nearly 2 hours for a status
|hearing. The judge proceeded to rip into them for 2 minutes about
|proper court conduct. They then let the judge know they had
|attempted to contact the prosecutor with information to get the case
|continued but they never responded despite repeated contacts and the
|person had call logs. They said they didn't want to waste the court
|or their time if unnecessary and were frustrated. The judge just
|stammered and said we'll get to you next and offered no apology for
|his overblown and arrogant response. I have a bunch of little

|That is not how a judge teaches respect. If anyone is disrupting court
