i@jeanyves It was a bit of both. There were usually individual FPs for a while, then a larger cumulative one would come along once in a while....but to make things more interesting, there are fixpaks for different system components, and care must be taken to apply them in the correct order :D On this system there's only one "component", but once I add networking and such, it gets more complicated..	fake	(NULL)	0

iInstalling the IBM Peer package - lets me talk to my Samba server and my OS/2 LAN Server. Should make it easier to get software loaded..So far I've- installed warp3- installed fixpak 40- spent a day trying to install drivers for my ISA ATI Mach64 "GPU"- rolled back the fixpak (yes, that actually works)- installed ATI driver (check out the 1280x1024x64k rez!)- installed the network stack (MPTS; 32bit version from the future!) and TCP/IP; patched up bothThis had only taken the better part of three days. :D#retrocomputing #slowcomputing #procrastination #ocd	fake	(NULL)	0

i@zerodogg Don't get me started :) The object model (System Object Model) behind the desktop (Workplace Shell) was inherently network-friendly (DSOM). You can subclass the default Folder class to add some features - I added play/pause/next/prev buttons plus simple calls to mpg123 and called it "mp3Folder", all with a few lines of REXX code. Threw shadows (symlinks) of some mp3 files in there, and shared it on the LAN. A colleague with OS/2 could access it and automatically saw the buttons and got the playback functions. I could even share the template itself, so they could create their own music folders. i@VulcanTourist not saying you're wrong about the corporations involved here, but for a long time (windows 1.0 through ME), OS/2 and Windows were only ever (and only briefly) visually related. From 2.0 on, OS/2 brought a *lot* of new stuff to the table, much of which still inspires - or is even imitated by, knowingly or not - open source tools today. So despite themselves, MS, IBM, and others who got involved directly or through spin-offs and sibling projects like OpenDoc and such produced entirely new computer interface and programming paradigms. They may not have come to fruition as successful or even released code, but that doesn't mean it hasn't influenced stuff that even today competes with Windows on the desktop or elsewhere. But without IBM many things would have been missing from this industry, for better or worse. MS with all their shitty marketing tactics and bullying and stealing are evil, but without MS many things would have been different - and who's to say it would have been for the better?It is what it is. I'm into digital archeology, and these things interest me. Please don't attribute to me opinions I clearly don't have.OS/2 was, objectively, a technologically superior product to Windows at the time. In particular the user interface brought paradigms to the desktop that were - and to some degree remain - novel.
