"I'm just a cook." -Casey Ryback

I don't know that Steven Seagal has any iconic lines, but
that one from "Under Siege" (1992) resonates with me. A guy
with some special skills and a questionable past, saved from
the chopping block to quietly finish his career and retire.

There are better exemplars from literature, but somehow
today I hear that "I'm just a cook" line playing between my
ears.

Now how do those other, disparate skills evidence themselves
in the role to which you've been cast? And what happens when
there are those who are hopeful that you will slide back
into that role you've left behind?

For now, I remind myself -- not so much when I'm instructed
as when I'm tempted to instruct -- to sit quietly in this
place, to avoid falling into the old traps. "I'm just a
cook. I'm just a cook. I'm just a cook. ..."
