I follow the Zen sect, but as for following traditions, I point to the "10 Basic Points"[3] and was pointed to Kālāma Sutta (AN 3:66)[4]. I practice zazen, because it is simple and minimal: you sit and "[verify] that the eyes are horizontal and the nose is vertical"[5] - that's it; not much cluttering your view. What follows after the sitting (e.g.: reading suttas) is your concern as long as it's not obstructing the clear view of the "Three marks of existence", त्रिलक्षण (trilakṣaṇ). I practice zazen at home as often as I'm able to. If I'm sitting, I usually start with 吉祥座 (kichijoza) in the morning and end the day with 護魔座 (gomaza) posture in the evening, both sessions in 半跏趺坐 (hankafuza). But it also depends on what happened during the day.. After stumbling upon 真向法 (makko-ho) in a translated copy of Robert Aitken's "Taking the Path of Zen" I start my day with these four excersises, after Wataru Nagai. To achieve and maintain a strong core and posture for meditation I plank[7] every day for at least a minute - in the end I want to maintain the plank for five minutes. During the excersise I concentrate on diphragmatic breathing. As an addition I'm observing Uposatha (AN 3:71)[6] 六斎日 (roku sainichi) once a week, albeit not abiding the eight precepts very strict. In essence I try to do without music, TV and sit down for meditation more often on these days. Since I incoporate intermittent fasting (16:8) in my daily routine, I don't have to observe my food intake (no food after noon) on Uposatha. The first Tuesday of the month I meditate with a local sangha. I'd go more often, but morning zazen is unfortunately only offered once a month. In the near future I want to take part in a 接心 (sesshin) and someday receive Jukai. For this I've chosen Monastère Ryumon Ji[8] since it's near Mannheim, Baden-Württmeberg.
